A BIG scare!

April 18, 2007

Had a big scare.

Was sitting in the lab all chuffed with my new purchase, all a glow one might say.

Pushed across to my next machine, whilst sliding back I bumped my precious! HARD.

(Precious = brand new 8GB memory stick, only hours old ,see article below ‘So In Love’.)

Of course it was sticking out dangerously from the from of my PC, in plain view where any self respecting idiot could clearly see it, as we all do.

Nooooo! Time slowed down.

Bent the thing to buggery, nearly cried, what an idiot! Why not get a USB extension cord? Thats too sensible, how would I ruin my new gadget then?

Alas all is well, did a bit of panel work on it, plugged it back in, works fine, a little bent, lesson learnt, USB extension cord on the way. Robust little bugger.

I did tempt fate, left it plugged in at the front but made sure to skoot extra carefully between machines.

A lesson there for all of us.

Now where was Mr Security when I needed him? Mr Security? Anyone?

FYI we have a great article on mobile phones, wifi, mobile VOIP & sat nav in the pipe line, stay tuned.

So long weary travellers.

Dr. Hfuhruhurr’s Top 5 New and Improved.

April 18, 2007

I’m selecting some software that hasn’t even been released yet. Foolish? Yes. Will that stop me? No.

Editing has been one of my stocks in trade over the past 18 or 19 years. In the last 8 years I have been using Avid and in recent times I started using Final Cut Pro. My main attraction to FCP is price and the desire to become acquainted with a piece of software that has been growing in usage in the last few years. In playing with FCP, I fell in love with simplicity and quality of Motion. When Apple released Final Cut Pro Studio 2 at NAB this week I was stunned with all the updates. Watching the demos on the Apple website I was totally blown away.

Motion 3 has now got 3-D. Wow! If it was only that, I would be happy enough, but it contains so many new features I couldn’t begin to list them here.

FCP6: now plays multi-resolutions in the same timeline (on my 1.25 G4 Powerbook? Umm.)

Soundtrack: now imports OMFS and AAF’s and again hosts a gaggle of jaw-dropping updates.

Compressor: many updates but exporting Flash Video and Windows Media Files out of the box is just what a new-multi-media bunch of dudes desperatley needed.

Color: New improved colour (english spelling please!) correction.

I’m not even going to mention DVD Studio (‘cos that would be 6 picks).

So that’s it. My newest top 5. Not even released. But if ( and it’s a big “if”, but Apple is OK at pulling this stuff off) it works as advertised, I’m going to be blown away again.

FCP 6
Motion 3
Soundtrack Pro 2
Compressor 3
Color.

Come on May.

I am sooooooo in LOVE…

April 16, 2007

The best $109.00 dollars I ever spent!

Had to share.

Just got an 8GB Transcend USB 2 Jet Flash Drive from D Computers located in the Store (old Pink Elephant Markets) killer price, Office Works was selling a 4 GB for $80.00! What the?

Mwah! I love it!!!!!!!

This should be standard issue, has a bunch of MEGA apps that run straight from the USB drive.

Running Jet Flash Elite software from the drive it can act as a USB lock on your PC, it compresses & saves files into military standard encryption at 256bit AES for MEGA security, access email from it (using different email accounts which leaves no trace of any correspondence on the PC), it automatically logs your favorite websites with user name & password which is pass word protected & logs you straight in when you get to the URL (no more fiddling around with passwords & login), store favorite web sites, automatically backup/restore/syncornise, & instant file browsing/transfer just like any regular disk drive…8GB is great, have seen 16GB sticks but not quite as cost effective.

Is it legal to marry a USB stick in Australia? Yes I am getting a bit silly now, but I have not been this impressed in years.

Let me know you thoughts, I had heard about these applications & just though ‘Blah, more marketing hype’ but I am so impressed, it works like magic, no fighting with it to get it going at all, just like all technology should.

These little beauties are a great example of well thought out technology, now if I can just work out how to programme my alarm clock.

Hmmmm…

Weekend Magz Summary (digital media/wotnext/vsocial)

April 11, 2007

Just finished my weekend readings, here is it`s essence:

Digital Media World has a MEDIA 2.0 section in it`s magazine now. A highlight for me was the mention of www.vsocial.com/propublisher which offers a way to DIY your own social video network, it is a turn key service for creating, distributing & monetising your own branded video channel & micro-sites…

The publishers of B&T have a new media publication launched this month DIGITAL MEDIA RRP $5.95. A nice magazine, really enjoyed the introduction to wotnext (only Telstra customers are eligible to be paid, not a bad marketing ploy to generate churn for the NextG network which is working quite nicely). Download clips to your phone or upload & share in the revenue (via PayPal) of your own clips “make bucket loads of cash!”. A good model for future monetisation of UGC content?

Got to go & encode & upload to Revver, Wotnext & YouTube to earn me some sweet, sweet cash!

 Bye, Bye…

Jargon Buster 2.OH!

April 10, 2007

Why reinvent the wheel, below are some great jargon busting links that might help bridge the web 2.OH! gap…

Web Video Links Etc (updated 9th April)

April 3, 2007

Some companies that have been getting quite a bit of chatter of late.

I am really archiving them so I don`t forget…have yet to give due diligence, unlike the free google wireless debacle which I signed up for, still can`t use my loo!

Narrowstep.com- multi platform media streaming, does stuff.

Babelgum – it does stuff, more streaming media to PC kind of thing

Brightcove – web video, view, search & syndicate

Roo TV  + Roo.com - web stream video, custom skinned video players & syndication. Aussie Aussie Aussie OI OI OI . Intersting business model, have picked up some very nice accounts…

Reel Time - video on demand, IP TV. Nice concept, reported financial trouble of late, althoug it does look like they have done a deal with a fledgeling telco for some much needed extra capital. Not a bad move as that bundled extras (web/voice/data) will be the new model for telcos.

Veoh Network – they do stuff too. more VOD stuff. Very nice

Advanced-television.com – a great resource site with news, developments etc.

Joost – VOD/P2PTV beta testing now from the creators of Skype & Kazaa (wiki entry)

Viewmy.tv – (thnx 2 Becky) free live IPTV, social tools, no downloads. (works nice thnx Becky)

ABC VOD – ABC Australia`s access to VID of their programming.

I`m starting to realise this stuff is exploding, there will no doubt be several casualties, but hats off to all for rolling your sleaves up, these are amazing times.

Also noticing that my internet access is not up to the job, sign me up for ADSL2 as soon as my exchange gets upgraded…

Timely Retort x5 Apps

April 3, 2007

Will try my best, although it will hard hard to top those previously posted little beauties…

Canopus Pro Coder - encode to multiple  formats from the one file, set watch files for automatic conversion, covers lots of different codecs.

Utorrent – great little app for hyper distribution of content, some big US players (Disney & National Geopraphic channel) have signed up for a pay model with copy protection DRM just like iTunes. Bloody great little application, apparently a friend has been watching the Apprentice LA from the states fresh off the press…

 works well with…

Torrentspy – searchable database for torrent files.

Nokia PC Suite – great little app. Transfer files etc to & from phone & PC. Can`t wait for the next versions that work just like magic.

Poser – totally wicked & intuitive to create, skin, animate & keyframe sexy 3D images. Dragons, people, characters, animals….so much fun!

Is that five?  I just ran out of ideas…
